22 Dec 2022

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has participated in the awareness event organised by the the Working Group of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) on Business and Human Rights, to discuss the protection of human rights defenders working in the field of business and human rights, which was held remotely via videoconference, with the participation of several national human rights institutions from the four regional networks of the GANHRI.

This event is part of a series of thematic online workshops designed to exchange experiences, disseminate good practices, and create a common learning environment among national human rights institutions working on this topic. It was presented by Mrs. Anna Abuna, Director of the Civil Liberties and Human Rights Defenders Programme and Natural Resources Researcher, from the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre in London, and Mrs. Alicia Abanto, Senior Deputy Ombudsman at the National Institution for Human Rights of Peru, who provided information on the Business and Human Rights Resource Centre, distributed links on a number of relevant documents on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and guidelines on ensuring respect for human rights defenders, clarified the limits of official statements related to the attack on human rights defenders and exchanged views on the mechanism of dealing with complaints related to human rights defenders in the field of business and how they can be defended, and the development of mechanisms for human rights work.
